Review an interview and fix one weak answer

After an interview, “revise metrics” is easy to write and forget. Pick one moment: the question, your answer and the follow-up that stopped you. Turn it into a concrete exercise.

Start with the evidence

Use only recordings or transcripts you are allowed to retain and review. Without a recording, reconstruct the question from memory and mark uncertain wording. Do not invent missing details.

One exercise needs the question, your answer, the follow-up and the reason you struggled. Remove names, contacts and confidential company information before using an external service.

Synthetic example: a rare positive class

Question: “The positive class is 1% of the dataset. A model has 99% accuracy. Is that good?”

First answer: “Yes, almost all predictions are correct.” Follow-up: “What accuracy would an always-negative model get?” The answer missed a simple baseline. This is a synthetic example, not a Vibe customer story.

Fix the specific mistake

An always-negative prediction also gets 99% accuracy here. That number alone cannot show whether the model detects positive cases. Inspect the confusion matrix and positive-class precision and recall, then choose metrics based on false-negative and false-positive costs.

For rare-event detection, discuss the precision-recall curve and operating threshold. Clarify how many false alarms are acceptable and what fraction of positives must be found. Do not replace one automatic metric choice with another.

Make it an exercise

  • Name the mistake: “I evaluated accuracy without comparing it to a constant prediction.”
  • Answer again: baseline first, metric limits next, then a question about error costs.
  • Check a small confusion matrix with 10 positive and 990 negative cases.
  • The next day, retry with a different class balance and missed-case cost. Keep the corrected answer closed.

Define improvement

Without hints, you compare to a baseline, identify missing information and explain the metric through the task. A longer answer alone does not show improvement.

Next, choose one other mistake: a missed condition, wrong term, missing example or invented experience. Practice them separately. Use the question bank for a nearby topic or MentorDS for structured ML/DS study.
