ChatGPT for interview preparation: prompts and answer checks
You ask ChatGPT for a mock interview, receive ten questions and read the answers. Recognizing the explanation can feel like preparation. A better check is to answer yourself, take a follow-up and retry later without the model answer.
1. Ground the answer in your resume
Provide a short resume and job description. Remove personal contacts and confidential employer information. Ask which requirements your experience supports and where evidence is missing.
Match this resume to the job requirements. For each requirement, quote supporting resume evidence or say “no evidence.” Do not invent projects, achievements or numbers.
2. Take one question at a time
Specify the role and seniority, then ask the model to wait. Use voice mode if your account supports it, or say your answer aloud before sending the text.
Interview me for [role and level]. Ask one question at a time and wait. After each reply, ask one follow-up about its weakest point. Do not show a model answer first.
3. Check the assumptions
Technical terms alone are not enough. In a recommendation-quality problem, clarify the metric, data split and distribution changes. Verify disputed claims against documentation or a textbook.
Review this answer: [text]. Separate factual mistakes, unstated assumptions and claims the problem does not support. Suggest a follow-up question for each mistake.
4. State the limits of your experience
If you have not used a technology in production, explain a relevant principle and your actual experience rather than learning a fictional project story.
I have not used [technology] in production, but I have done [real experience]. Help me answer with that boundary. Do not attribute other people’s responsibilities or results to me.
5. Retry a weak question
Save the question, your first answer and one concrete mistake. Try again the next day without opening the model answer. Check whether you fixed the mistake on your own.
Ask a new question about the same idea as [question], using a different situation. After I answer, check whether I fixed [mistake].
During a real call
A text chat requires transferring the question and reading a reply while the conversation continues. Do not assume any ChatGPT mode automatically receives Zoom system audio. Voice features depend on the current product, account and device.

A synthetic practice example
Question: “Why can a random split overestimate model quality on time-dependent data?” First answer: “Because the data are similar.” Follow-up: “Which future information entered training?”
An improved answer should identify a possible leak: training on later events, features containing future information or related observations across splits. It should then describe time-based validation with feature availability taken into account. This is a synthetic training example, not a customer recording.
